When you look at your LIFE...the GREATEST happinesses...are FAMILY happinesses

A Sleepover...

So, suddenly, we are really into doing sleepovers together.

It is so cute...the kids get so excited.
They beg, and promise they won't talk...(yeah, umm, right)

Then they decide which room they will sleep in, and they set up camp.
They get all of their blankies and stuffed animals, and lovies!

Then it is bedtime...
And the talking...
Singing...
And giggling begins!
We stomp back to their rooms, at least 7 times...telling them to go to sleep...and quit talking...
All the while, we sit together on the couch with perpetual smiles on our faces, and tears in our eyes, talking about these little people.
Like, real little people.
I truly think it still confounds us that they are growing everyday.
Developing into people, with real feelings and complex thoughts.
We feel incredibly fortunate that they love each other so much.
And they do.
Really, A LOT.
So.....Every single time, we have one of these "sleepovers", they end up going one of two ways....
About our eighth time of going back to the room...we either separate them into their own rooms, where they fall asleep in minutes....
Or...

We find something like this...

Then we stand there.
Starring.
In the presence of everyday miracles.

Happy Thanksgiving...

From our house to yours

Hoping all that you are thankful for--is in your home, in your heart or on your mind today, and that the spirit that is Thankgiving, keeps those things close to you, all year long.
(Painting by Makylie. Preschool, November 2010. Age 4.)

Snow, kids, hills......SLEDDING

The little kids had never been sledding like this before.
They have gone with daddy, down our street hill...and on our driveway...
But not big, steep, grassy hills...by themselves, before.

They were timid at first. Especially Tyler. Makylie goes at most things with no fear...but Tyler, thinks, and re-thinks...and is a little stand-offish until he is comfortable.
They started out walking most of the way down the hill...and then sledding from there....
But
That.Didn't.Last.Long!

They were having SO MUCH FUN!

I mean, LOOK at this picture of Maky. It just says it all!
This is what most of the shots that I took looked like.
Smiles that spread across their entire face...and laughs that were so filled with BELLY, you could hear them wide-spread through the neighborhood.
Their expressions were so heart-filled.
So incredibly real.
You simply could not wipe the happy away.

They have on rainboots. I thought I had snowboots...but turns out...I didn't.
They had to wear rainboots.
If you have ever worn rainboots in the snow(which I did on this day as well)....you know how cold your toes get.
3-4 pair of socks. Didn't matter. Still frozen toes.
They didn't care.
They would have stayed all day long.....

So...
just when we thought it couldn't get any better....
THE FRIENDS SHOWED UP.
Oh....if our toes were frozen solid...if we were ready to go home and have cocoa...
It all went away when our friends came.
I seriously don't think they could have had more fun!

They are just such a nice group of kids,
and they always include Makylie, and are very nice to her, which makes me really happy.

Just a FUN day!

Chloe, Tyler, Rohnan.......(Emily and Makylie were just off to the side...)
I haven't been sledding like this, since Karman was little.
Then when she had all of her surgeries we had to stop letting her do things where she could have an impactive fall...so sledding, was out.
It brought back all kinds of memories!

One last trip down the snow-covered hill...
Then it was time to go warm up all of our frozen toes...and fingers...and noses....
and have some hot cocoa....and talk about how we hope we can go do it all again, tomorrow.
Thank you for a Happy Day my Snow Angels!
Mommy promises to buy you snowboots right away!

Frozen Over...

We got some more snow.
However, we are simply FROZEN around here....
so the snow was just a bunch of powder.
No snowmen could be built...to forts to hide in...
Just a slippery layer of ice covering every inch of the road!

So, really...what else is there to do?

But pile on daddy....and sled!

There wasn't a lot of snow...but the kids didn't care!

Maky put to use the snowball maker that we got on clearance last year.
The snow was not good for snowballs.....but she worked...
and worked....
until her perserverence...
PAID OFF

That was the best part of her day.
Getting her daddy with that snowball!

So back at it she went...until eventually...

Everyone was in on it!

It does make some GOOD snowballs!
We love snowdays!!!

80 years...

Today...this lady turned 80.

This is Mary.
Kevin's paternal Grandmother.
I love her!

We had a big party....with about a hundred people.
I was a good day.
She glowed a little all day long!

Happy Birthday Grandma
We love you!

Have you ever wondered...

What would happen if THIS little girl...

Got ahold of my camera....
********************************************
Well...
It looks a little like....

******************************************

******************************************

And this....

******************************************

******************************************

******************************************

And even some of this....

******************************************

******************************************

******************************************

Sometimes, I wonder how she views the world from down there.
So small, always looking up.
Then I saw these pictures....
hmmmmmmm......
...........................................................................
No wonder she is so shy and doesn't talk to anyone.

Putting the Thanks, in Thanksgiving (day 13)

I have been unfortunately reminded lately that still walking among us are very ignorant people.

They make snap judgements, and comments, and really do not take into consideration who may hear them...who they may hurt in the process, and why those opinions being broadcast are inappropriate.

Sadly, my reminder doesn't come from a person of an older generation (whom we know sometimes have their opinions, inappropriate as they may be, that have carried over from their younger years) nor does it come from a religious group who may have a mass and deep routed teaching to carry on their opinions that may seem outdated today.

I guess it is hard for me.
Someone with seemingly the same background as myself being so blinded and self indulged. So selfish, and ignorant.
I have a problem with it.

I am not a naive person.
I know there are prejudiced people, and ignorant people. They are everywhere...but sometimes it takes me by surprise.

I have nothing in these moments.
Nothing to say, nothing to offer...
because how are you supposed to respond to
STUPID?

And when I look back and try to contemplate the vast level of ignorance that is before me in those situations, I have to hope it is simply a lack of education.

Today, I am thankful for my EDUCATION.
and not just my school-education, but life-education. The lessons in my life from the hard times, the good times, the things I self-taught. I appreciate that fact that I learned from them all.
They have made me a very open-minded and accepting person.
I have a lot of common sense, and I like to think, a VERY high level of intuition, especially in dealing with people.

This, I hope, insures that I will forever let people be people.
That I will rejoice in the good of the world whether it has to do with me or not.
That I will never be so self-centered as to think I know everything there is to know about anything.

Because I don't.
And, I am educated enough to know that.

Putting the Thanks, in Thanksgiving (day 12)

I literally don't know where the years have gone.
18.
When they say, time flies, they really do mean it.

In the dark of night, I sit and think back. I remember everything so vividly.
I remember the cute little things that she would say. I remember what a terror she was and how she broke everything she touched when she was little.
I remember how attached she was to the strangest things, and how she would play with her ponies for hours.
I did a photo shoot of her...in a daisy field one time. I was no good at photography back then, and there was no such thing as digital...but she posed and was so innocent.
Absolutely etched in my brain are those pictures on that day.

There have been many many hills to climb with her.
There have been battles that we never thought we would have to fight.
When she was diagnosed with cancer we didn't know what the future held, and it made us question the very foundation of all that was real. I got a very real sense of the fact that mortality is real...and it made me appreciate.
It made us all appreciate.

For the past 5 years, to say there have been bumps in our road, would be an understatement.
After all of the surgeries, and the follow ups ended....
We had a full on teenager.
Karman...you test us every single day.
More so now, then ever before.
You seem to think there are no consequences for actions.
You torture us with your endless abandon toward real life responsibility, and with insistance that we are always wrong. You suddenly question everything we say and do.
You think you are smarter then us.
But...
You are a good kid.
You are a good person.
There are many things that you do not do, that others do...and we are proud of that. Very proud.
You have made some HUGE strides in the last two years, and I hold hope that over the next two years, if you make the same kind of strides that things will get so much better!
Your grades are amazing this year!
You are outgoing, smart, loyal and loving.
You are curious and ambitious and filled with endless possibility and that warms me.
*********
Some birthday advice from your mommy.....
We are in fact, NOT always wrong. Sometimes, the sky is just blue, whether we say so, or not.
Despite how I know it sometimes feels, we actually TRULY do want the VERY best for you. Believe me, I know it sucks, but we have more experience and can simply see things, that you are not capable of seeing yet.
We most certainly, don't expect perfection, we expect only what we KNOW you are extremely capable of.
Trust me when I tell you, as a mom, and a woman, I know that if you don't have a strong head on your shoulders, and know who you are and what you stand for, that this world will, quite literally, eat you alive. That is why I demand that you figure those things out. The only way to do that...is to stand on your own two feet...fall, and then stand back up. Only looking back to make sure you don't fall from the same thing again. Understanding fully, that the only people who fail, are the people that don't stand back up and try again.
Never underestimate, that there will always be more learning to do...embrace that. There are opportunities for learning, everywhere.
Always, give your best, whether there are expectations for it or not. It says a lot about a person. When you think you have done enough, do more. Just because.
*******
Just know, there will never be anyone who loves you more then we do.
No one who wants more for you, then we do.
No one, who in the end would stand up for you, more then we would.
In turn though, there is no one who expects more from you then we do.

Because we know you are, and can be...
AMAZING

Today I am THANKFUL for Karman.
Happy Birthday.

Happy Eighteenth...

November 12...1992

I could go on for hours about how I can not believe that Karman is 18 today.
But I just did that in her senior photoshoot post.

She is so not ready to be 18.
I wish we could shelter her from everything out there...
That we could teach her in a way that she would REALLY hear us, everything that she needs to know, and to throw out the things she shouldn't worry about.
I wish I could make her see that she has the right to self-confidence, and that she shouldn't care about what people think, what they say, or any of the high school drama, because that is just not the way life really is.
At least not the good parts of life.
***************************

(18 treats to take to school and share...and 18 treats on her card.)

And that too.
I wish we could make her truly hear us, when we say that LIFE GETS BETTER.
So much better.
That all of the things that seem, SO important now, just aren't.
That the battles around here that start with no big deal...and end with doors slamming, and words being thrown about as though they have no meaning...are so not necessary.
That getting her way, is never going to and should never win out to her safety and well-being...and if that makes us the worst parents in the world...
well, we love her enough to have that be OK with us for now.

I wish for my daughter, nothing but the most amazing of everything.
She is amazing...and can do amazing things...
Now...if only she could really, truly, see that!
Happy Birthday Karman,
We love you!
